Days 1 – 2: Elephants at the Smoke that Thunders
This 8-day tour begins with the only tented safari camp on the Zimbabwean side of the Victoria Falls. Set in a private reserve with views of the waterfall a few miles away, The Elephant Camp not only gives you the classic under-canvas experience but its in-house waterhole often attracts a local herd of elephants. And you’ll also have time to visit the nearby elephant sanctuary where you can feed orphaned babies and pose for jumbo-sized selfies. The camp combines superior luxury and romance and you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy activities ranging from sunset river cruises to walking with tame lion cubs.
Days 3 – 4: A Hwange Hideaway
One of the few safari accommodations located within Zimbabwe’s famous Hwange National Park, Little Makalolo is an intimate 6-suite camp with a perfect setting over a busy waterhole. You can enjoy game viewing from the comfort of an armchair here but even more drama waits away from camp. Game drives and walks with expert guides open up the natural secrets of Hwange while a visit to a local village delivers the human aspect of life in big game country. Hwange is a great place to see classic animals such elephants, buffalo, giraffe and lions; it is also home to rarer creatures such as cheetah, wild dog and white rhino plus a 400 plus bird list.
Days 5 – 7: Into the Wild – Mana Pools
Flying between Hwange and Mana Pools means you avoid a day’s tough travel by road; you’ll be settling in at Ruckomechi after lunch. One of Zimbabwe’s longest-established safari camps, Ruckomechi lies under shady trees overlooking the Zambezi River and the mountains of the Great Rift Valley. It’s a wonderfully romantic setting and you may be reluctant to leave your grand tented suite but game drives, canoe safaris, boat cruises and walking safaris are all on offer. You can even try your hand at fishing, maybe for the infamous tiger fish. Back at camp you have a swimming pool and relaxing hammocks to while away a hot afternoon; dinners are often served under the stars.
Day 8: The Journey Ends
You’ll fly back to Victoria Falls Airport after a last breakfast at Ruckomechi and a transfer to the local airstrip. Your tour ends at Victoria Falls with your onward connection.
