Days 1 – 2: An Okavango Encounter
Protecting much of the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is a rich natural environment that blends beautiful scenery with extravagant wildlife. Xakanaxa – your destination – is a mouthful to pronounce (Ka Ka Ni Ka) but is one of the best game viewing regions in Moremi. Elephants and buffalo move through Moremi’s woodlands and onto floodplains covered in antelope and birdlife; it’s a good area to look for lion, leopard and wild dog too. You enjoy game drives as well as a day spent exploring the Okavango’s waterways by motor boat, complete with picnic lunch on a delta island.
Days 3 – 4: To the Khwai River
From one wildlife hotspot to another: the endearingly named Khwai River is one of the last stretches of Okavango water and has long been a rewarding area for game viewing. As with all your Botswana safari accommodation, your tents are set up in an exclusive-use campsite, giving you peace and quiet during your afternoon siesta as well as intimate nights around the campfire. Khwai is a great place to tick off classic animals like giraffe and zebra as well as more unusual animals like sable antelope; Xakanaxa is also notorious for its predators – big cats and wild dogs plus many smaller ones like jackal, honey badger and wild cat.
Days 5 – 6: The Savuti Experience
It’s a game drive all the way from Khwai to Savuti, the epicentre of the Chobe National Park and a strong contender for the best destination for predators in Botswana. Watered by the now-flowing Savuti Channel, the area attracts animals all year round and is famous not just for its enormous – and often placid – bull elephants but for the struggle on the savannah between lions and spotted hyenas. Your campsite lies near the channel and you’ll enjoy morning and afternoon game drives as well as a visit to a San Bushman rock art site.
Travel north through the Chobe National Park to the Chobe River where you enjoy 2 nights on a full board basis at a private campsite.
It is a landscape largely of woodland and the occasional village before you catch sight of the Chobe River, the second largest in southern Africa and vital water source for Africa’s biggest elephant population. It is an area of abundant wildlife – there are large numbers of buffalo, giraffe and many antelope species – and it is one of the best bird watching destinations in Africa. Your campsite lies under teak trees close to the river and you have morning and afternoon game drives to look forward to as well as an optional boat safari, something recommended in the late dry season when wildlife concentrations along the river are very high.
Travel across the border into Zambia & the town of Livingstone; check in at Zambezi Waterfront, your en-suite lodge accommodation, for 1 night on a breakfast only basis.
You say farewell to the camp and its crew after a leisurely breakfast, driving the short distance to the border with Zambia. Before saying goodbye, your guide will assist you with border formalities and onto your road transfer to Zambia and your lodge in Livingstone. Rooms are simple but comfortable and have their own bathroom; most are set close to the Zambezi River. You have the afternoon to do as you like – a visit to Victoria Falls perhaps, and some souvenir shopping. Note that lunch and dinner plus all activities in Victoria Falls are for your own account.
Day 10: The Journey Ends
You will need to make your own arrangements today; the services of our operator end after breakfast. We can arrange a transfer to Livingstone International Airport for an onward flight but if you’d like to see more of Victoria Falls and book an activity or two, simply let us know and we’ll add on the extra accommodation. Victoria Falls is Africa’s adventure capital and activities range from scenic flights, river cruises and elephant-back safaris to white-water rafting and bungee jumping.
