Days 1 – 4: Discover the Mother City
You have 3 full days in Cape Town so you won’t miss a thing, especially as you have your own car and a convenient seaside base at The Clarendon Bantry Bay. Get an early start and see Table Mountain and Boulders Beach penguin colony before exploring Cape Point for ocean views and baboons. There’s plenty of time to fit in adventures like shark-cage diving, whale watching and hiking as well as more sedate family pursuits such as lounging on beaches, riding the Topless Bus, visiting the excellent aquarium and shopping at the V&A Waterfront. Breakfast is part of the deal at The Clarendon; lunches and evening meals are enjoyed in one of the area’s many restaurants.
Days 5 – 8: Welcome to the Garden Route
The drive from Cape Town to Knysna will take up most of the day but the dazzling scenery will make up for it. The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s finest coastlines and home to family-friendly beaches, warm ocean water, and dozens of diversions ranging from golf and mountain biking to canoe trails and fishing. Children will love places like Monkeyland and Birds of Eden and there is also an elephant sanctuary for jumbo-sized encounters. Owner-managed and priding itself on its guest-centric experience, your accommodation is Kanonkop House, set on top of a hill overlooking Kynsna Lagoon and just a short walk into town.
Days 9 – 12: A Malaria-Free Big 5 Safari
It’s not far to George Airport where you return your car and fly to Madikwe Private Game Reserve via Johannesburg. You may prefer to self-drive yourself from Johannesburg to Madikwe but the short flight is often preferred to the 4-hour drive. Set on the edge of the Kalahari, Madikwe is Big 5 country, home to lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino as well as wild dog, giraffe and zebra. Unlike most other Big 5 destinations however, Madikwe is malaria-free and welcomes families with children of all ages. Your destination is Madikwe Safari Lodge where you’ll spend 4 nights on a full board basis, enjoying game drives and nature walks as well as treats like your own plunge pool and game viewing deck. Younger children are entertained at the Kids’ Safari Club and baby-sitters are also available.
Day 13: The Journey Ends
After a final breakfast at the lodge you’ll fly back to Johannesburg for your onward connection.
