Days 1 – 3: Discover the Cape
With two full days on hand you can cover most of the attractions that the Mother City and her surroundings offer. Make the most of your self-drive independence: the Cape Peninsula is worth a day’s touring – you’ll see penguins, Cape Point and Table Mountain – while the second day could be spent exploring the Cape Winelands or fitting in a hiking or shark-cage diving trip. Your comfortable base is a boutique guesthouse in Bantry Bay, the most sheltered part of Cape Town’s Atlantic coast in the windy summer season. It’s just a few minutes’ drive to Cape Town’s best beaches and the popular V&A Waterfront.
Days 4 – 6: At the Heart of the Garden Route
It’s a fairly long drive from Cape Town to Knysna but you won’t be short of scenery. Craggy mountains accompany you all the way and once you hit the rolling green hills of the coast, you’ll see why it’s called the Garden Route. Make your way to Knysna, the friendly little town at the centre of it all and check in at Villa Afrikana, a clean-lined masterpiece of modern design. You’ll have an exclusive setting with unobstructed views of the lagoon but still be within walking distance of Knysna’s Waterfront and town centre. Two full days give you plenty of time to explore this activity-packed region.
Days 7 – 9: A Malaria-free Safari
The drive continues along the coast to Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. Your destination is Hlosi, a small 14-chalet lodge with a classic hilltop setting. Now you can trade the car keys for binoculars and a camera: game drives, canoe safaris and guided walks are part of the deal at Hlosi. Amakhala is Big 5 country, home to lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino as well as cheetah, zebra and giraffe; night drives reveal smaller predators and rare nocturnal creatures. There’s a pool, sundeck and an observation hide overlooking a waterhole. Meals are served communally inside or outside or in the privacy of your own suite.
Day 10: The Journey Ends
It’s only an hour’s drive from Hlosi Game Lodge to Port Elizabeth Airport where you’ll return your car and catch your onward flight.
