Days 1 – 3: A Private Big 5 Safari
The tour opens with Mkulumadzi Lodge, set in a private concession within the Majete Wildlife Reserve, Malawi’s biggest and oldest conservation area. And the restored and rejuvenated Majete has a new claim – it’s the only Big 5 destination in the country. Robin Pope’s famously skilled guides will be on the lookout for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino as you explore by 4X4 and motor boat. Back at the well-appointed camp you can make use of a photographic hide set over a wetland or head off with your guide to visit a local community.
Days 4 – 6: A Highland Estate
After breakfast it’s a road transfer south to a tea-growing region, spread out over rambling hills and home to the clean elegant lines of Huntingdon Estate. A restored colonial-era house, the accommodation lies on a working tea estate and offers the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating area. Lace up your hiking boots, hit the mountain bike trail or head off with binoculars for some spectacular bird watching. Tea tasting is not to be missed, and the estate grows coffee too. Accommodation takes the form of splendid suites, each uniquely designed and themed on an historical aspect of the estate.
Days 7 – 10: The Lake of Stars
Whether it’s so named because of the glittering reflections of the stars on its waters, or because of the twinkling lights of local night fishermen, Lake Malawi dazzles regardless. It’s a 5-hour road transfer to get here but the scenery en route is often captivating and there’s a friendly welcome at Pumulani Lodge. The only lodge in the Lake Malawi National Park, Pumulani has a private setting and provides a great base from which to do as little or as much as you like. There’s a wide range of water sports plus diving and snorkelling as well as mountain biking and hiking. Your chalet comes complete with en suite bathroom and lounge which opens onto a private deck overlooking the lake.
Day 11: The Journey Ends
After breakfast you will be transferred to a local airport at nearby Monkey Bay for a flight to Lilongwe International Airport and your onward connection.
