What Regions or Countries to Combine
A Damaraland safari is usually part of a bigger itinerary featuring other top destinations such as Sossusvlei and the Etosha National Park. Located between Swakopmund and Etosha and with access to the Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld, this destination fits in nicely and a two or three night stay will give travellers plenty of time to experience what Damaraland has to offer. Our best combinations with Damaraland are as follows.
Namibia’s flagship park lies north of Damaraland and you can leave your Damaraland accommodation after breakfast and be in time for an afternoon game drive in Etosha. We recommend staying in a private concession adjoining the main park: you’ll have the advantage of private game drives, spot-lit night drives & guided walks as well as access to Etosha.
The giant red dunes of the Namib Desert are most accessible at Sossusvlei where they rear up hundreds of feet into the air. Several excellent camps and lodges are scattered throughout the area, and there’s even the chance to take a hot-air balloon safari over the ocean of sand, a stunning spectacle as the sun rises.
It’s not far from Damaraland to the Atlantic Ocean and the seaside town of Swakopmund, Namibia’s popular summer holiday destination. The Bavarian-inspired town makes a lovely safari stop-over and is worth a night or two to recharge batteries both literal and metaphorical. Further up the coastline however lie the wave-thumped beaches of the Skeleton Coast, littered with hulking shipwrecks and ghost stories – made for adventure!
