Damaraland

Where Next

What Regions or Countries to Combine

A Damaraland safari is usually part of a bigger itinerary featuring other top destinations such as Sossusvlei and the Etosha National Park. Located between Swakopmund and Etosha and with access to the Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld, this destination fits in nicely and a two or three night stay will give travellers plenty of time to experience what Damaraland has to offer. Our best combinations with Damaraland are as follows.

Etosha National Park

Namibia’s flagship park lies north of Damaraland and you can leave your Damaraland accommodation after breakfast and be in time for an afternoon game drive in Etosha. We recommend staying in a private concession adjoining the main park: you’ll have the advantage of private game drives, spot-lit night drives & guided walks as well as access to Etosha.

Sossusvlei

The giant red dunes of the Namib Desert are most accessible at Sossusvlei where they rear up hundreds of feet into the air. Several excellent camps and lodges are scattered throughout the area, and there’s even the chance to take a hot-air balloon safari over the ocean of sand, a stunning spectacle as the sun rises.

Swakopmund & Skeleton Coast

It’s not far from Damaraland to the Atlantic Ocean and the seaside town of Swakopmund, Namibia’s popular summer holiday destination. The Bavarian-inspired town makes a lovely safari stop-over and is worth a night or two to recharge batteries both literal and metaphorical. Further up the coastline however lie the wave-thumped beaches of the Skeleton Coast, littered with hulking shipwrecks and ghost stories – made for adventure!

What To Do

Activities to Look Forward to

1. Go on a Game Drive

Damaraland’s desert-adapted elephant, cheetah, lion & black rhino are the most sought after sightings but your guide will be on the lookout for antelope, giraffe, small predators & brown hyena too.

2. Count the Stars

Mostly uninhabited & far from any major town, Damaraland’s inky black night sky is lit up by millions of dazzling stars. Sit back after supper & let your guide steer you through the cosmos.

3. Walk on the Wild Side

Whether you’re tracking rhinos or simply taking a nature walk around camp, being on foot with your guide is a must-do activity – your chance to see this extraordinary landscape close up.

4. See Ancient Rock Art

Created millennia ago and continued more recently by Khoisan hunters, the paintings & engravings at Twyfelfontein will make you gasp in surprise at their artistry and the stories they tell.

5. Go Bird Watching

Damaraland is home to around 250 species of bird including many raptors & a host of local endemics – ask your lodge for a specialist birding guide. Best in the summer months.

6. Visit a Local Community

Several lodges emphasise Damaraland’s human experience too – ask us about accommodation that offers the chance to visit local communities & support social & economic projects.

7. Search for Scorpions

After dark, another realm of the Namib awakes. Walks reveal some of these captivating critters such scorpions which fluoresce under UV lights.

8. Watch the Sunset

Not to be missed are the spectacular sunsets from the many different “sundowner” spots in the Damaraland. Enjoy the Amazing views together with some drinks and snacks!

Walter has always been an excellent communicator and has supported us fully

We have been to Africa for 24 of the last 27 years so know a bit about what is involved. Walter has arranged the details for the last couple of years, and has done a superb job. He is always quick to respond and comes up with answers immediately……..no evasive tactics, always head-on!

Professional, quick and top of the edge service!!!

From the very first contact we’re very happy about the respond time and quality of information from safari-online.com. Based on the received first tailor-made quote, which is a weblink with all the details about the flights, photos of the lodges etc. we knew that this is “our” partner for this trip. Our expectations were excelled!!!

Would highly recommend. Safari online asked questions when booking and were efficient and knew exactly what we were looking for in terms of accommodation and animals were wanted to see. Gave advice on a few little extras with no pressure, which we did and am very grateful which make trip even more exciting. Would definitely recommend booking with them.

Karina was absolutely instrumental to our safari success.

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver.  We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

It was a safari of a lifetime and exceeded all of our expectations!

Our mom grew up in Central and South Africa so we had visited the continent many times. My sister and I wanted to take our teens and husbands to Africa to experience the magic. We had a limited budget but big and specific expectations and by some miracle Walter was able to manage both.
