- Ruaha National Park
What Regions or Countries to Combine
Wild and remote, the Ruaha National Park is best experienced as part of a bigger itinerary in Tanzania and beyond. Accessible via daily flights from Dar es Salaam, Ruaha combines easily with the other popular destinations of Tanzania’s ‘southern circuit’ such as Katavi National Park and the Selous Reserve as well as little-known gems like the chimpanzee-filled forests of Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream national parks.
It is a little further to fly to Tanzania’s more famous ‘northern circuit’ destinations of the Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti and a border crossing if you want to experience Kenyan Masai Mara Safari. But all these combinations use smooth-running and well-tested logistics and a more extensive east Africa itinerary is easy to create, even so far as to include gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda.
One of our favourite combinations is however to trade the binoculars and 4X4 for a swimming costume and a hammock and hit the golden beaches of Zanzibar and its dazzling island archipelago.
There are only a handful of visitors each year to this huge, wild & largely untouched park. A fly-in destination, Katavi is best during the long June to October dry season when tens of thousands of animals gather at the park’s rivers & waterholes, attracting predators ranging from big cats to hyenas & wild dogs.
Africa’s biggest conservation area, the Selous Reserve is home to large populations of animals such as lion, buffalo, hippo and elephant. Best explored by 4X4 & on foot, the Selous’ lodges are usually set on or near water which means exciting boat safaris too. Go during the June to October dry season for the best game viewing.
Finish off your safari with something a little different … an afternoon in a hammock swaying between two palm trees, a scuba dive off a tropical reef and a table for two set on a starlit beach: Zanzibar is a classic Indian Ocean destination with something for every kind of traveller. Choose from honeymoon hideaways, family resorts & luxurious boutique hotels.
