What Regions or Countries to Combine
A Lower Zambezi safari is usually part of a larger itinerary in Zambia, taking in Victoria Falls and the South Luangwa via domestic flights. International access to Zambia’s Lusaka and Livingstone (Victoria Falls) airports means that Zambia can easily be combined with destinations further afield. It’s a one-stop flight to South Africa where you can add Cape Town, the Kruger or the Garden Route to your tour. One of our favourite combinations however is Lake Malawi, home to golden-sand beaches and tropical-blue water.
Upstream from the Lower Zambezi lies thundering Victoria Falls. You’ll need to fly from the Lower Zambezi to Livingstone but then it’s easy – choose from grand hotels and tented camps to honeymoon hideaways and family villas. Make sure you have enough time to do everything you want to do – there’s bungee jumping, rafting, walking with lions, elephant-back safaris and scenic flights.
Zambia’s most famous conservation area has long attracted attention: the South Luangwa is classic big game country and home to some of the densest concentrations of big animals in Africa. At its magical best in the dry season when wildlife is concentrated at the life-giving Luangwa River, this untamed wilderness is explored by 4X4 and on foot, accompanied by some of the best guides in the business.
Finish off your safari in tropical style – a luxurious beachfront retreat on Lake Malawi. Golden beaches and palm trees, scuba diving and snorkelling, water skiing and wind surfing – it’s all there. Spend the day doing as much or as little as you want; the hammocks have a view and dinner will be served by candlelight.
