Itinerary
Day 1: A Highland Beginning
Having met your guide at Arusha Airport, you sit back on the overland transfer as the rolling green landscape of the Ngorongoro hills passes by. Your destination is The Highlands Ngorongoro, a hi-tech tented camp on the slopes of an extinct volcano. There’s plenty of time to settle in, unwind from the journey and take a stroll around the grounds to absorb your new surroundings.
Days 2 – 4: The Greatest Show on Earth
It’s a long day today but one of the most wildlife-packed days possible. An early start gets you onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater where not only zebra, hippo and wildebeest roam but the Big 5 too – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. After an action-filled drive and picnic lunch, your guide drives you via Olduvai Gorge to the southern plains of the Serengeti and Serengeti Safari Camp. A simple but comfortable tented camp, it sits where the wildebeest herds gather between November and March. The next two days are spent following the migration on game drives, the herds under near constant attack from predators and providing some of the most dramatic game viewing in Africa.
Days 5 – 7: A Rainforest Retreat
Wild frontiers beckon as you leave the open savannah and take an early flight to the forest-covered mountains of Mahale. Your destination is the magical Greystoke Mahale – surely a contender for the most visually stunning safari accommodation in Africa. Set on an idyllic Lake Tanganyika beach, the lodge provides the ideal base to explore the Mahale rainforests, home to troops of hooting chimpanzees as well as forest antelope and other primates. When not tracking chimps, you can explore the lake by dhow, try a bit of fishing or go looking for birds and hippos. Candle-lit dinners are held at the water’s edge or aboard a dhow on the lake but make sure you try the fresh sashimi first!
Days 8 – 9: Land of Giants
Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania’s off-the-beaten-path destinations. Only one per cent of visitors to the country go there but it’s Tanzania’s second biggest park, home to the largest elephant herds in East Africa and all the big predators – lion, leopard and cheetah as well as crocodile, the highly endangered wild dog and spotted hyena. Enormous baobab trees, many hundreds if not thousands of years old, stud the wild-looking landscape. Morning and afternoon game drives from Kigelia Ruaha, a 6-tent camp, take you onto the heart of the action.
Days 10 – 12: To the River
It’s an hour and a half by air to Selous Game Reserve where you’ll sit back on a 4X4 transfer to Sand Rivers Camp, enjoying a game drive along the way. The Selous is Africa’s largest reserve and home to huge numbers of big mammals, many of whom gather at the edge of the Rufiji River, over which the camp is set. The bird watching is amazing, and you can hear the honking of hippos from the river below camp. Expert guides introduce you to the Selous, and you’ll explore by boat as well as 4X4 and even on foot before returning to the expansive comfort of your river-facing cottage.
Day 13: The Journey Ends
After breakfast you’ll transfer back to the Selous airstrip and catch a flight to Dar es Salaam for the end of the tour. Here you can connect with your international flight or hop across to Zanzibar for an add-on beach holiday – ask us how.
