Itinerary

Day 1: A Rovos Departure

Afternoon departure from Pretoria’s Rovos Rail station. Enjoy dinner on board & overnight on a full-board basis.

Complete with its own train station, Rovos Rail has long promised to deliver the quintessential luxury train journey. Duly acknowledged as the leaders in this kind of travel, the train’s burnished brass and wood fittings lend an air of yesteryear travel; you’ll be expected to dress for dinner and your butler will be on hand for room service. Pulling away from the city, the urban landscape falls away to reveal a more natural one and the train falls into an easy rhythm. As the light fades, the Karoo Desert appears; its night skies ablaze with countless stars.

Day 2: The Great Interior

Mid-morning arrival in Kimberley for a sight-seeing visit; lunch, dinner & overnight on board the train near the historic village of Matjiesfontein.

You’ll be making a stop today to see what lies beneath this rocky Karoo ground: a mid-morning arrival in the town of Kimberley takes you on a tour to see the famous Big Hole and Diamond Museum. It is then lunch and an afternoon at leisure aboard the train as you make your way through the barren but beautiful Karoo to overnight outside the historic village of Matjiesfontein. Meet fellow travellers in the lounge or bar, or simply sit back and let the Karoo entertain you.

Day 3: Welcome to the Mother City

Visit Matjiesfontein after breakfast before travelling through the Cape Winelands, arriving in Cape Town in the early evening.

There’s time for a morning visit to Matjiesfontein after breakfast before heading south. It’s not long before the magnificent mountains of the Western Cape appear, rumpled and craggy with Alpine-style vineyards nestling in their valleys. The landscape briefly flattens out before the mountains of the Cape Peninsula come into view with flat-topped Table Mountain prominent. It’s an early evening arrival in Cape Town which gives you time for a transfer to an accommodation of your choice. There are many accommodations that would complement a Rovos Rail experience – ask us for recommendations and we’ll make the necessary bookings.
