Itinerary
Day 1: The Journey Begins
Whether you are travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town or vice versa, each journey begins with a 08:30 departure and a 15:00 arrival the next day. Drinks and snacks are served before you board, and then you’ll be shown to your suite. All suites are air conditioned and have a private bathroom with all the luxuries you’d expect – and more. A personal entertainment system with movies and music comes with the suite as does Wi-Fi and butler service.
Trains leaving Pretoria stop for an afternoon visit to the town of Kimberley, once the epicentre of the diamond mining industry and formerly South Africa’s second biggest city. You’ll enjoy a tour of the museum and ‘Big Hole’ before a glass of sherry and an evening departure.
Trains leaving Cape Town will make an afternoon stop in the Karoo and the town of Matjiesfontein, its modest appearance belying its interesting historical aspect. You’ll enjoy a tour of this curious Victorian-era town and a glass of sherry before returning to the train.
All meals – breakfast/brunch, lunch, high tea and dinner – are served on board and all drinks are included. Note that the dress code for dinner is formal – jacket and tie for men, evening wear for women.
Day 2: An Afternoon Arrival
You’ll wake to the sight of rugged South Africa scenery rolling past as you head for your final destination. It’s a 15:00 arrival so there is plenty of time to make the most of the Blue Train. The Lounge Car is a popular meeting place as is the Club Car, complete with Cuban cigars, rare whiskies and board games like chess and backgammon.
On arrival at Cape Town or Pretoria, guests are ushered to the private Blue Train lounge where the journey ends and your onward connections begin. Ask us about holidays in Cape Town or the Kruger – the Blue Train also runs from Pretoria to Hoedspruit, gateway town to the mighty Kruger National Park and its superb Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve.
