Itinerary
Days 1 – 3: To the River
The Luangwa River is the lifeblood of the South Luangwa National Park and your accommodation lies right on its banks. Built in the welcoming arms of giant riverside trees, the camp’s beautiful tree house will be your home for the next three nights. You’ll have all you need for comfort – a king-size bed, tea and coffee facilities and a mini bar plus private bathroom and veranda – as well as the chance to sleep under the stars. Expert guides lead morning and afternoon game drives into the park with guided walks available during the long dry season. The South Luangwa is Zambia’s signature conservation area and home to some of the last big game concentrations on the continent. It’s a great destination for heavyweight species such as elephant, hippo, buffalo and giraffe as well as big cats and hyenas.
Days 4 – 7: Into the Wild Heart
It’s a morning’s drive to Lion Camp but since you’ll be following the river deep into the South Luangwa, it is effectively a giant game drive. Arriving at Lion Camp, you’ll realise that this is a special place. Operating only during the dry winter season, Lion Camp sits at the heart of big game country and has a reputation for big cats as well as perhaps the densest concentrations of hippo and crocodile in Africa. Your luxurious canvas and thatch chalet has its own bathroom and veranda and comes complete with a four-poster bed romantically swathed in mosquito netting. Morning and afternoon game drives are balanced by bird watching and superb photographic opportunities at the waterhole in front of camp. You can also go for a guided walk and meet a vehicle for sunset drinks and then continue on a spot-lit night drive.
Day 8: The Journey Ends
After breakfast at Lion Camp you sit back on a game drive/transfer back to Mfuwe Airport and a flight to Lusaka for the end of this tour. If you’d like a couple of nights at Victoria Falls, it is very easy to incorporate into this tour – just ask us.
