Itinerary
Days 1 – 3: Into the Forest
Set overlooking the leafy canopy of the forest, Bwindi Lodge has been designed to maximise your rainforest experience. The highlight is of course your gorilla trek. Accompanied by expert guides, you hike into the light-dappled interior of an ancient African forest in search of a gorilla family, content to allow us an hour of their company. But there’s time to explore further; enjoy guided nature walks, birding trips and cultural encounters with the Batwa forest people, once hunter-gatherers in this wild landscape. Back at camp you can swop gorilla stories around the fireplace or sit and watch monkeys and birds from the comfort of your private veranada.
Days 4 – 6: Land of the Samburu
From the dripping rainforests to the rocky, arid landscape of northern Kenya: the Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya’s less-visited wildlife destinations but is home to excellent wildlife ranging from the unique ‘Samburu Special 5’ to elephants, lions and leopards. You’ll be based at the intimate and elegant Saruni Samburu, sitting in a private concession and offering activities ranging from game drives and guided walks to cultural tours and spot-lit night drives. A special highlight is the traditional outdoor dinner, served under the stars and to the accompaniment of Samburu songs and dance.
Days 7 – 9: The Mara Plains
A private setting gives you the advantage of game drives in both the conservancy and the main Masai Mara Reserve itself, assuring you of amazing wildlife sightings regardless of season. But it is for the wildebeest migration that the Mara is best known and by having a choice of two accommodations, you are guaranteed front row seats to the biggest show on earth when a million wildebeest roll onto the Mara plains between July and November. Knowledgeable Maasai guides lead the way, and you’ll also have the option of a hot-air balloon safari, an unforgettable experience and followed by a champagne breakfast on the savannah.
Day 10: The Journey Ends
There’s time for a game drive or a visit to a rhino sanctuary before you fly back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Depending on the time of your arrival, you will either be transferred straight to Jomo Kenyatta International or via a restaurant for dinner. If you’d like to finish this safari with a relaxing few days on an Indian Ocean beach, simply let us know and we will arrange a Kenya beach add-on.
