Itinerary
Days 1 – 2: Explore the Luangwa River
Set in a private conservation area, Nkwali Camp sits on the broad banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the South Luangwa National Park. Such a position gives its guests the advantage of easy access to Zambia’s flagship park as well as activities in the private reserve such as nature walks and spot-lit night drives. Expert guides lead you through the experience and you’ll have the chance to take to the water by motor boat too. Each of the camp’s six rustic chalets has lovely river views and features an outdoor shower for the quintessential shower under the stars.
Days 3 – 4: A South Luangwa Safari
It’s an early breakfast today but the reward is wildlife spotting all the way to Nsefu Camp, located deep in one of the South Luangwa’s most game-rich areas. Accommodation here takes the form of rondavels – round stone and thatch cottages – with luxurious en suite facilities and stunning views of the Luangwa River through their large windows and veranda. The camp’s bar and lounge overlook a productive lagoon, often frequented by elephant, lion and leopard, and activities here are a blend of walks and game drives with the chance to visit a local village too.
Days 5 – 7: Private Zambezi Views
It is a full morning of travel time but you will be sitting down to lunch with the Zambezi River flowing past you. Regal, sophisticated Royal Zambezi Lodge sits on the river a few minutes from the entrance gate to the Lower Zambezi National Park and offers activities ranging from game viewing and catch-and-release fishing to sunset river cruises, guided canoeing trips and cultural village tours. One of the most luxurious lodges in the area, Royal Zambezi Lodge has 15 impeccably finished tented suites as well as a plunge pool, a wellness spa and even Wi-Fi access.
Days 8 – 10: Discover Kafue
It is about an hour and a half to fly from the Lower Zambezi to Kafue, a journey that takes you from a dramatic river to a dramatic wetland: Shumba Camp has an elevated position on Kafue’s Busanga Plains, a well-watered and particularly wildlife-rich area of this little-visited park. Busanga is a place of antelope herds and their predators – lion, cheetah and leopard – as well as stunning scenery and famously pink sunrises. Your suite looks out over the plains, making ‘armchair game viewing’ a popular choice, augmented by day and night drives with boating and canoeing when water levels permit.
Day 11: The Journey Ends
There is time for breakfast and perhaps a last morning safari activity before you make your way back to the airstrip. This transfer is made with a combination of vehicle and boat or, depending on water levels, just by vehicle. You catch a flight back to Lusaka where the safari ends with your arrival at the airport and the commencement of your onward travel arrangements.
