Itinerary
Days 1 – 2: Walk to the Smoke that Thunders
Arrive at Ilala Lodge when Victoria Falls is in full thundering flood and you’ll check in with the spray from the waterfall drifting around you. One of the area’s best located hotels, Ilala is within easy walking distance of Victoria Falls and puts you at the heart of the town of Victoria Falls. It is a hotel with a reputation for a homely atmosphere, and staff will be happy to make any activity bookings you require. This is, after all, Africa’s ‘Adventure Centre’ with activities ranging from bungee jumping and white-water rafting to sunset cruises and scenic flights. Back at the hotel you have the convenience of an in-house restaurant and each room is air conditioned.
Days 3 – 5: Mana Pools Magic
Mana Pools National Park encompasses a great swathe of Lower Zambezi River. Its diverse and unspoilt water and land habitats create a wildlife haven, especially in the dry season when large numbers of thirsty animals arrive. It’s also one of the most activity-rich destinations in Zimbabwe. You’ll be mixing 4X4 game drives with boating and canoe trips as well as walks, all in the safe hands of some of the best safari guides in the business. Your accommodation is a mobile tented safari camp; simple, comfortable and totally authentic, right down to the hot-water bucket shower and Zambezi views from your bed. Electric lighting and battery-charging facilities add an appreciated modern-touch.
Days 6 – 8: A Private Hwange Safari
A short flight between Mana Pools and Hwange cuts out a long drive and puts you at the heart of mighty Hwange National Park by lunchtime. Your destination is Somalisa Camp, one of the best places in Zimbabwe to see elephants up-close. The camp’s in-house waterhole is a favourite of the local herd and a viewing deck allows you jumbo-sized views. Somalisa is a small tented camp with a warm and personal atmosphere and they like to serve supper under the stars. Its location within a private concession allows its guides to lead day and night game drives as well as walking safaris while also accessing the main park. Your tented suite comes with a full bathroom, outdoor shower and a viewing deck complete with easy chairs and a hammock.
Day 9: The Journey Ends
After breakfast you’ll enjoy a game drive on the way out of the park before a two or so hour drive on the tarred road to Victoria Falls Airport. Here the tour comes to an end.
