Itinerary
Days 1 – 3: Land of the Rhino
Hluhluwe Game Reserve is South Africa’s oldest reserve and has long been one of the best places in Africa to see white rhinoceros. Your base is Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, enjoying an elevated setting and magnificent views. After settling into your air-conditioned suite (which also has a fireplace), you’ll meet your guides and discuss the activities you’d like to do. Morning and afternoon game drives are the main focus but there’s a chance to walk with your guide to see a more subtle side to the bush – birds, animal track and medicinal plants. Hluhluwe is Big 5 country and you’ll be on the lookout for all the members of this club: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and of course rhino.
Days 4 – 6: Interact with Elephants
Leopard Mountain Lodge is set in the Zululand Rhino Reserve which gives you a great chance to spot these animals if they have eluded you in Hluhluwe. And as the name suggests, it is prime leopard country too. You’ll be exploring by 4X4 with your sharp-eyed guide but make sure you save some time to visit the elephants at a nearby sanctuary for an up-close encounter with these friendly, habituated giants. Other treats include spa treatments at the hands of professional therapists as well as your own private balcony with hammock and private plunge pool.
Days 7 – 10: A Romantic Beach Retreat
The safari theme changes with your arrival at one of South Africa’s last truly wild beaches and Thonga Beach Lodge, carefully built into bird-filled coastal forest and radiating a romantic serenity. It’s one of the best scuba dive sites in the country and home to nesting turtles between November and February; other highlights available from the lodge include cultural tours, birding and guided walking excursions. Tucked away in the shady forest, your suite comes complete with private bathroom and balcony; at the main camp there is a spa, pool and wonderful food, served outside whenever possible. Their candlelit supper at the ocean’s edge is a favourite among romantic travellers.
Days 11 – 13: Discover Pongola
With the Lebombo Mountains and Lake Jozini as a backdrop, you’d be excused for wanting to spend most of your time at White Elephant Camp looking at the views. But this is where you can mix game drives and nature walks with boat cruises and canoe adventures and there’s even an opportunity to go fishing. There’s great bird watching and game viewing to enjoy and guests can participate in elephant and rhino research programmes. Accommodation takes the form of luxurious safari tents with their own bathrooms complete with ball and claw bath, outdoor shower and private veranda.
Day 14: The Journey Ends
After breakfast at camp you will be transferred back to Richard’s Bay (about two hours by road) for the end of the tour and your onward travel arrangements.
