When to go

The best time to combine Marakele National Park in the Waterberg, Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, and Sabi Sand Game Reserve in a single itinerary is during the shoulder months of April to May and September to November, when conditions are optimal across all four destinations. Marakele offers comfortable safari conditions with excellent wildlife viewing in its dramatic mountain landscapes, Cape Town enjoys mild weather perfect for exploring Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, and vibrant city life, the Cape Winelands showcase harvests in autumn and blossoms in spring for memorable wine tastings, while Sabi Sand delivers superb Big Five encounters and its renowned leopard sightings. Together, these months balance city exploration, gourmet indulgence, and thrilling wilderness adventures.

Winter (June to August) is also a good option, particularly for safari enthusiasts. Dry conditions in Marakele and Sabi Sand concentrate animals around waterholes, offering reliable sightings, while Cape Town’s cooler season brings dramatic coastal scenery and whale watching opportunities. The Cape Winelands remain cozy with fireside tastings, and Knysna‑style coastal charm can be enjoyed nearby.

Summer (December and March) brings lively energy and lush landscapes, but also challenges. Cape Town and the Winelands can be crowded and more expensive during peak holiday season, while Marakele and Sabi Sand experience hotter conditions and occasional summer rains, which can make wildlife more dispersed.

The least favorable months are January and February, when Cape Town faces strong winds and peak tourist congestion, the Winelands are busy and humid, and both Marakele and Sabi Sand experience rainy season conditions with humidity and afternoon storms that affect safari comfort.
