Itinerary
Day 1: A Nairobi Retreat
Start this safari the easy way: House of Waine is set in a quiet and leafy Nairobi suburb, giving you the perfect oasis after a long international flight. There’s a swimming pool and high tea on offer but you may want to save some time to visit the nearby attractions of the Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Sanctuary and the ever popular Giraffe Centre. Each room at House of Waine is equipped with satellite TV, air conditioning, internet connection, and tea and coffee-making facilities.
Days 2 – 3: Explore Amboseli
It’s a morning’s drive from Nairobi to Amboseli but you’ll arrive at Porini Amboseli Camp in time for lunch and an afternoon safari activity. The camp is a typical Porini accommodation – small, intimate and built to minimise its impact on the environment; you’ll also enjoy the privacy and exclusivity of a private conservancy setting, enabling you to enjoy drives in the private reserve as well as the main park. Guides lead day and night drives as well as nature walks and village visits to ensure your Amboseli experience is as rich as possible.
Days 4 – 5: A Private Big 5 Safari
Set on the foothills of Mount Kenya, Porini Rhino Camp lies in the highly regarded Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a conservation area that is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) as well as a rescued chimpanzee sanctuary. Ol Pejeta is a conservation success story with ongoing research programmes, and you’ll be in the company of expert guides who’ll introduce it all to you via game drives, village visits, nature walks and spot-lit night drives. There are only six tented suites at Porini Rhino Camp, each with their own view and bathroom. Dining is usually an outside affair – a bush breakfast perhaps or a candle-lit supper for two under the stars.
Days 6 – 7: Into the Mara
A flight via Nairobi gets you to the Masai Mara in time for lunch and your first afternoon activity. You’ll be exploring one of the Masai Mara’s best private conservancies, enjoying exclusive, crowd-free game sightings in a classic savannah landscape. If you’ve arrived during the wildebeest migration then you can sit back to the drama as thousands of animals move through the area but such is the wildlife here that you’ll have excellent sightings year round. The camp’s six tents are arranged near water to ensure you can spot animals while you relax in the shade of your private veranda.
Days 8 – 9: Land of the Lion
Set in a private Masai Mara conservancy, Porini Lion Camp sets the bar high for both eco-friendliness and game sightings. A low-impact, solar power-run camp, Lion Camp lies next to a river, giving you the chance to watch hippos while you sip a cocktail but it’s for predators that Lion Camp is best known, especially – no surprise – lions, which occur in great densities here. You’ll explore by 4X4 as well as on foot, and there’s also the chance to go hot-air ballooning (optional) which gives you a unique perspective of the landscape.
Days 10 – 13: An Indian Ocean Reward
Flying from the Mara plains to the Indian Ocean coast puts you on a white tropical beach the same day you left the burnished savannah. Pinewood Resort sits on Kenya’s famous Dani Beach and offers as much or as little to do as you want. There are swimming pools, sun loungers and hammocks as well as a dive centre, tennis and squash courts plus a luxurious spa where you can enjoy massages and beauty treatments. All rooms are air-conditioned and have a ceiling fan and mosquito net for complete comfort.
Day 14: The Journey Ends
After a farewell breakfast you’ll transfer back to the local Dani Airstrip for a flight back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. You’ll be met and transferred to Nairobi’s main international airport – Jomo Kenyatta – for your onward connection and the end of the safari.
