Itinerary

Day 1: To the Volcanoes

Arrive at Kigali International Airport & transfer to Volcanoes National Park by road. Check in at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge for 3 nights on a full board basis.

You arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to Virunga Volcanoes National Park. It’s a 3 hour drive to Volcanoes Virunga Lodge, perched high on a ridge with stunning views of lakes and volcanoes. You can even look forward to a complimentary massage! Stretch your legs on a walk to Lake Bulera or visit the local Mwiko School.

Day 2: In Search of Giants

Depending on weather and local conditions, today is usually the day to trek into the forest to find mountain gorillas. It’s often wet and muddy but the rewards are worth it: expert guides lead you through a hushed, green cathedral-type atmosphere to deliver you almost face to face with enormous mountain gorillas, relaxed in their natural environment. You’ll spend an hour with them, watching infants play and mothers groom each other, all overseen by the watchful silverback. If you are lucky enough to see the gorillas close to camp, you’ll be back for lunch and can choose an afternoon activity from the long list on offer.

Day 3: Explore the Forest

Optional activities – gorilla trekking (additional permits required), guided nature walks & cultural tours.

You can go gorilla trekking again today (requiring additional permits) but today is generally the day to discover the other side to the gorilla’s home. You could go on bird watching hikes through the forest or look for golden monkeys. You may like to walk to nearby lakes with their sandy beaches, or visit a local school or community project. Many guests hike to Dian Fossey’s grave. Back at camp you’ll find a friendly and relaxed ambiance with hearty 3-course suppers served every night; log fires ward off the highland chill.

Day 4: The Journey Ends

Return to Kigali for your onward connection.

After breakfast you will be transferred by road back to Kigali for the end of your tour and onward connection.
