Best travel period

When to go

The best time to combine Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Game Reserve in a single safari itinerary is during the shoulder months of April to May and September to November, when conditions are optimal across both destinations. These periods bring mild temperatures, clear skies, and excellent wildlife visibility, making game drives comfortable and rewarding. Kruger offers vast landscapes and diverse habitats with abundant Big Five sightings, while Sabi Sand is renowned for its intimate safari experiences, luxury lodges, and exceptional leopard encounters. Together, they deliver a balanced blend of wilderness adventure and exclusive game viewing.

Winter (June to August) is also a good option, particularly for safari enthusiasts. Dry conditions concentrate animals around waterholes, and visibility is superb, though mornings and evenings can be chilly. This is peak safari season, with both Kruger and Sabi Sand offering unforgettable predator and prey interactions.

Summer (December and March) brings lush greenery and calving season, which is excellent for birdwatching and newborn wildlife, but dense vegetation makes spotting animals more challenging. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and humidity can affect comfort levels.

The least favorable months are January and February, when heavy rains and high temperatures reduce visibility and make wildlife more dispersed. Travel logistics can also be impacted by muddy roads and unpredictable weather.
