Indian Ocean Islands

Beach 101:
A Beginners Guide

Where to begin

The ultimate planning guide

Planning your first Indian Ocean island escape can feel overwhelming. Mauritius or Seychelles? Barefoot luxury in Mozambique or spice-scented culture in Zanzibar?

Start with this: Be inspired, but be intentional. The time of year you travel, how much you want to invest, and the rhythm you prefer — whether slow and secluded or active and exploratory — will define your island escape far more than a list of must-sees. Let’s break it down.

01. Where to go

Choosing Your Island Destination

Mauritius

Polished, diverse and easy to navigate, Mauritius blends beaches with lush mountains, golf courses, waterfalls and vibrant local culture. It’s ideal for couples, families and active travellers who want more than just beach time.

Seychelles

A postcard-perfect archipelago of granite boulders and turquoise water. Think island-hopping between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, boutique hotels, nature reserves and some of the world’s most photographed beaches.

Zanzibar

A cultural-meets-coastal experience. Combine white-sand beaches with the historic charm of Stone Town, spice tours and Swahili heritage. Something to Note: On the east coast, the ocean can retreat hundreds of metres at low tide. You may wake up to a postcard-perfect turquoise sea and by midday see exposed reef and sand flats.

Mozambique

Remote, romantic and wonderfully raw. This beach destination offers a castaway-style luxury, exceptional diving and dhow sailing with fewer crowds. Certain areas (Vilanculos) experience noticeable tidal shifts like Zanzibar.

How to choose?

It comes down to: flight access from your safari destination, Budget range, Desired accommodation style (large resort vs boutique island lodge), Activities beyond the beach, Travel pace (single island vs island-hopping). An island specialist at Safari Online can match your priorities with the right destination and region within each country.

02. When to go

Weather and Seasons

Unlike safari regions, island travel revolves around wind patterns and ocean conditions

Peak Season (Best Overall Conditions)

Generally, September to March for the island destinations. Expect sunny days, an occasional (and might I add very welcome) downpour and clearer sea conditions — perfect for swimming, snorkelling and sailing.

Although this is the “WET” season, the temperatures are warmer. So warm that one can continue swimming while it rains. It is the most popular time to travel to a beach destination, so you’ll expect higher rates and earlier booking requirements.

Pros:

  • Warm temperatures for all day swimming (Even a night dip in the ocean)
  • Lush scenery allows you to take in the tropical beauty of the islands
  • Plenty of other travellers from all walks of life and destinations, giving you a chance to forge relationships with people from across the globe

Cons:

  • Higher humidity due to the rain
  • Rougher seas in some regions
  • Cyclone risk (mainly Jan–March)

Dry Season

Usually May – August (varies slightly by destination). Expect coolers temperatures, lower humidity and less tropical showers.

Pros:

  • Lower rates, longer stays
  • Less downpours, allowing you to enjoy the sunshine
  • Fewer visitors, giving you a slightly more intimate holiday

Cons:

  • Cooler sea/pool temperatures may mean slightly less swimming
  • Lower visibility for snorkelling and diving d
  • South East trade winds (May to October) brings cooler, drier air

Shoulder Season

April and November can offer excellent value with pleasant weather before peak crowds arrive.

03. When to Book

Realistic Booking Timelines

12 to 18 Months Before Travel

For popular travel seasons ( July, August & December holidays) and exclusive private island resorts. Essential for family villas and multi-bedroom units.

Ideal for securing preferred room categories and flight availability, especially for honeymooners.

Still possible with flexibility on exact resort or room type.

Considered late for peak dates, but good deals may appear outside school holidays.

04. The costs

Understanding Costs

Island pricing varies by destination and accommodation style rather than activities.

Estimated Cost Per Person Per Night

MID-RANGE

$150–$450

LUXURY

$500–$900

DELUXE / PRIVATE ISLAND

$1,000+

What Affects Price?

  • Location (private island vs mainland coast / East or West side of the island)
  • Season (peak vs low season)
  • Garden room (cannot see the sea) vs Sea facing room (can see the sea through lush palm trees/vegetation) vs Private Beachfront Villa (you can smell the lapping ocean from your bed you’re so close)
  • Meal plan (Bed & Breakfast vs Half Board vs Full Board vs All-Inclusive)
  • Transfers (boat or helicopter transfers in Seychelles and Mozambique can add significantly to the cost)

Additional Expenses

  • International flights
  • Island transfers
  • Travel insurance
  • Spa treatments & premium excursions
  • Diving certifications or speciality water activities

05. Duration

How Long Should You Stay?

Ideal Duration

5 nights is the usual after an active Safari trip, although We’ve found that 7 nights allows proper relaxation.

Island Hopping

Seychelles

5-7 nights across 2–3 islands

Mozambique

4-7 nights on one archipelago

Mauritius

5-7 nights in one resort, or split north/south coasts

Zanzibar

3-4 nights beach + 1–2 nights Stone Town

06. Activities

What Can You Do on the Islands?

Water Activities

  • Snorkelling & scuba diving – Nearly all resorts offer complimentary snorkelling trips (including the needed gear) provided you make use of their excursions. Diving would be at an extra cost and tailor made based on your qualification / experience.
  • Sailing & dhow cruises – These activities can be prebooked or you can chat with the concierge at your hotel when you’re in destination.
  • Deep-sea fishing – Almost all resorts across the Indian Ocean will have operators that offer deep sea fishing.
  • Other complimentary activities – Each resort may vary but in most cases you can enjoy the peddle boats, kayaks, glass bottom boat trips, SUPs, waterskiing, wakeboarding and more. These are usually complimentary no matter what meal basis you’re on; just confirm with your island expect when booking if these form an important part of your holiday.
  • Golf – Some of the island destinations are very well known for their golf courses. If teeing off is high on your priority list, make sure we know about it so that we include resorts that either have their own 18-hole championship course, or an affiliation to one close by.
  • Hiking and nature reserves – Some of the islands have a vast range of nature activities that you can do outside of your resort. Visit UNESCO sites, waterfalls or volcanos.
  • Cultural tours and spice farms – Each island destination has been very intentional on holding on to its unique heritage. From Spice farm tours in Zanzibar to visiting an island that don’t have a single car in Seychelles.
  • Resort sports – If you don’t want to leave your resort, you don’t have to. You can take part in the morning yoga, followed by aqua gym before lunch, compete in the volleyball tournament before sunset and play padel in a floodlit court after dinner. Some of the sports may incur extra costs so it’s best to ask your specialist.
  • Beachfront spa treatments – There is no better place to relax the mind and have a professional massage all those day-today stresses out. Hearing the tropical birds chirp, the smell of coconut and vanilla… just… breathe.
  • Sunset cruises – Perfect for newlyweds, or a mom & dad that want t leave the kids with the resorts babysitters so that they can have a full conversation without being interrupted.
  • Private beach dinners – Image just the 2 of you, the table is set on the sand just footsteps away from the water and candles flicker in the night breeze. A set menu has been prepared to suit your tastebuds and all you need to do is allow the luxury of the island to take over.
  • Honeymoon packages – Islands are popular honeymoon destinations for a good reason, being surrounded by ocean creates an immediate sense of seclusion. Many island resorts are designed with private villas, plunge pools and direct beach access, allowing couples to feel wonderfully removed from the world.

Mauritius perfect for families. Most resorts have complimentary kids’ clubs and a daily schedule that will keep them so busy, you may feel like you’re on honeymoon again. Seychelles and Mozambique lean more toward couples and older children.
