The best time to hike Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, when weather conditions are most stable and the trails are safer and more comfortable. These periods offer clearer views, lower rainfall, and better summit success rates, making them ideal for both first-time and experienced trekkers.
The first excellent window is from January to early March. This time of year is generally warmer than mid-year, with fewer climbers on the mountain. While there may be occasional clouds and some snow near the summit, conditions are usually favourable, and it’s a good choice for those who prefer a quieter experience without peak-season crowds.
The second and most popular season runs from June to October. This period is characterised by dry weather, clear skies, and excellent visibility. July through September are the busiest months, as they offer very reliable climbing conditions, although temperatures at night; especially near the summit can be extremely cold.
The months to avoid are April and May, which coincide with the long rainy season. During this time, trails become muddy and slippery, cloud cover is heavy, and overall trekking conditions are poor. November is also less ideal due to short rains, which can be unpredictable, though it is still more manageable than April and May.
