Islands in June

June introduces cooler, breezier conditions across much of the Indian Ocean. While some islands experience stronger winds, others shine with dry, sunny days and excellent visibility for marine life encounters.

Overview

Where to go for a June Beach escape

Trade winds dominate in June, particularly affecting the Mauritius and Seychelles.

This creates varied conditions, windward coasts can be rough, while leeward sides remain calm and swimmable. It’s also a fantastic time for kite surfing and sailing.

June introduces the southeast trade winds, bringing cooler, drier air across much of the Indian Ocean. Temperatures range from 23–28°C, and humidity is noticeably lower, making it one of the more comfortable times to travel.

These winds create varied coastal conditions. In destinations like Mauritius and the Seychelles, southeastern coasts can be windy and rough, while western and sheltered areas remain calm and ideal for swimming.

Rainfall is minimal, and skies are often clear, particularly in Zanzibar, where the dry season begins.

1. Mauritius

WHY GO

With the cooler, drier winter season, June’s perfect for combining beach, culture & adventure.

WEATHER

Temperatures range from 24°C to 28°C, with cooler evenings and much lower humidity. The southeast trade winds may navigate your choice of resort.

COMBINATIONS

Try Serengeti National Park or Kruger National Park. You get excellent safari conditions and near-perfect island weather.

Hiking Le Morne Brabant rewards you with sweeping views over one of Mauritius’ most iconic coastlines.

June is one of the best times to hike Le Morne Brabant, thanks to cooler temperatures and lower humidity as Mauritius transitions into its dry winter season. Conditions are far more comfortable than the hot, humid summer months, making the climb more enjoyable and less physically demanding.

The weather is typically stable, with clear skies and minimal rainfall, which means better visibility from the summit, one of the main rewards of the hike. From the top, you can take in panoramic views of the UNESCO-listed peninsula, the surrounding reefs, and the striking contrast between deep ocean blues and shallow lagoon turquoise.

Another advantage of hiking in June is the reduced wind on the west coast, where Le Morne is located. This creates safer and more pleasant conditions, especially for the final, steeper section of the climb which often requires some light scrambling.

Overall, June offers the ideal balance: comfortable hiking weather, clearer views, and a quieter, more peaceful experience on one of Mauritius’ most iconic natural landmarks.

2. Zanzibar, Tanzania

WHY GO

The start of the best weather period of the year with lower humidity, clear skies, and excellent beach conditions.

WEATHER

June is cooler, dry, and comfortable—the start of the southeast monsoon (Kusi), which may bring occasional choppier seas.

COMBINATIONS

Try Serengeti National Park or Kruger National Park. You get excellent safari conditions and near-perfect island weather.

Carved wooden doors, winding alleyways, and centuries of culture tell the story of Zanzibar’s rich heritage.

June offers a quieter, more atmospheric time to explore Stone Town, as it falls at the tail end of the rainy season. While occasional showers can still occur, they are often short-lived and bring a freshness to the air, making walking through the narrow streets more comfortable than in the hotter, peak-season months.

With fewer tourists around, you can experience Stone Town in a more authentic and unhurried way. This is the perfect time to wander its maze-like alleys, visit historic buildings, and interact with local traders in the markets without the usual crowds.

The softer light and occasional dramatic skies also make June a beautiful time for photography, adding depth and mood to the town’s unique architecture. Between exploring, you can pause in shaded courtyards or seafront cafés, soaking in the blend of African, Arab, and European influences that define this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Insider tip

The southeast winds can make some northern and eastern beaches windy. Sheltered areas are ideal for diving and inshore fishing. Offshore big game fishing is less active.

3. Bazaruto, Mozambique

WHY GO

June marks the start of Mozambique’s dry season, which is widely considered the best time to visit.

WEATHER

Dry, sunny with daytime temperatures of 25–27°C. Mornings and evenings can feel cool so pack light layers.

COMBINATIONS

Try Serengeti National Park or Kruger National Park. You get excellent safari conditions and near-perfect island weather.

June is a very good time to enjoy comfortable fishing conditions and uncrowded waters.

As Mozambique moves into its dry winter season, the region offers calm seas, clear skies, and excellent water visibility, creating ideal conditions for both offshore and inshore fishing. The weather is comfortably warm during the day, with cooler mornings and evenings, making long days on the water far more enjoyable than in the hotter summer months.

The waters surrounding Bazaruto are rich in marine life, and June delivers a diverse range of species. Offshore, anglers can expect exciting action with Yellowfin tuna and Wahoo, both of which are particularly active during this time. Dorado (Mahi-mahi) are still present, adding bursts of colour and speed to the experience, while Sailfish may also be encountered, although this is not their peak season. The variety ensures that each day on the water offers something different.

Closer to the reefs and drop-offs, the fishing remains consistently productive. Anglers targeting structure can enjoy the thrill of landing powerful species such as Giant trevally, along with kingfish, snapper, and grouper. Techniques like jigging and popping are particularly effective in these areas, offering a more hands-on and physically engaging fishing experience. The healthy reef systems around the islands make this style of fishing both reliable and exciting throughout June.

Insider tip

For travellers seeking a balance of adventure and relaxation, fishing in Bazaruto in June offers an unforgettable Indian Ocean experience, set against a backdrop of pristine islands and turquoise waters.
