When to go

The best time to combine the Cape Winelands, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Sabi Sand Game Reserve in a single itinerary is during the shoulder months of April to May and September to November, when conditions are optimal across all four destinations. The Cape Winelands are vibrant with autumn harvests in April and spring blossoms in September, making wine tasting and gourmet dining especially rewarding. Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, along the Garden Route, enjoy mild weather perfect for lagoon cruises, forest walks, and coastal adventures, while Sabi Sand offers excellent Big Five viewing with comfortable safari conditions and its renowned leopard sightings. Together, these months balance city, coast, and wilderness in a seamless journey.

Winter (June to August) is also a good option, particularly for safari enthusiasts. Dry conditions in Sabi Sand concentrate animals around waterholes, offering superb predator sightings, while the Cape Winelands remain cozy with fireside tastings. Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are cooler but still pleasant, with fewer crowds and dramatic coastal scenery.

Summer (December and March) brings lively energy and lush landscapes, but also challenges. The Cape Winelands, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay can be crowded and more expensive during peak holiday season, while Sabi Sand experiences hotter conditions and occasional summer rains, which can make wildlife more dispersed.

The least favorable months are January and February, when Cape Town and the Winelands face strong winds and peak tourist congestion, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are busy and humid, and Sabi Sand’s rainy season brings humidity and afternoon storms that affect safari comfort.
