Falls to shores

The best time to visit Vilanculos in Mozambique is during the dry season, from May to November, when the weather is sunny, warm, and ideal for beaches, snorkeling, diving, and exploring the Bazaruto Archipelago, while avoiding the hot, humid, and cyclone-prone summer months. Victoria Falls is at its most dramatic during the high-water season from February to May, though June to September offers lower spray and better conditions for walking trails, white-water rafting, and viewing the falls with less mist. Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is best visited in the dry season from May to October, when wildlife congregates around waterholes, making sightings of elephants, lions, and other animals more predictable.

For a combined trip, May, September, or October offer an excellent balance: Vilanculos has pleasant beach conditions, Hwange is prime for wildlife, and Victoria Falls still has impressive water flow while allowing easier exploration of the surrounding area. Conversely, it’s best to avoid December to March in Vilanculos due to heat, humidity, and cyclone risk, and November to April in Hwange, when heavy rains make safari drives difficult and wildlife more dispersed.
