When to go

The NamibRand Nature Reserve, located in the southern Namib Desert, is one of Namibia’s premier wilderness areas, known for its towering sand dunes, vast desert landscapes, and exceptional stargazing opportunities. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October. During this period, temperatures are moderate during the day, making activities like dune climbing, desert drives, and guided nature walks much more comfortable. Wildlife, including oryx, springbok, and desert-adapted predators, is easier to spot around limited water sources. The skies are generally clear, providing spectacular sunrise and sunset photography opportunities as well as some of the best stargazing conditions in the world.

Nighttime temperatures can be quite cold, particularly in June to August, so warm clothing is essential if you are camping or staying in semi-permanent lodges. Road conditions in the reserve are far more manageable in the dry season, ensuring safe access to remote areas and dune vistas.

November to April is the wet season and is less ideal. Although rainfall is infrequent, sporadic showers can make tracks difficult to traverse, and daytime temperatures can be very high, making desert activities physically challenging. Wildlife is more dispersed, and the desert landscapes, while greener, lose the stark, dramatic contrast for which the NamibRand is famous.
