Best travel period

When to go

The best time to visit Kenya is also during the dry seasons, when wildlife viewing is excellent and travel conditions are at their easiest. These periods combine good weather with iconic safari experiences, particularly in the Masai Mara.

From June to October, Kenya enjoys its main dry season and this is considered the prime time to visit. Temperatures are mild, rainfall is low, and animals gather around permanent water sources, making game viewing reliable across parks such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu. This period also coincides with the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, with dramatic river crossings typically occurring from July to September.

Another very good time to travel is from January to March. These months are warm and mostly dry, with fewer visitors than peak season. Wildlife viewing remains strong, especially in Amboseli, where clear skies often provide excellent views of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is also a pleasant time for beach holidays along Kenya’s coast.

The months to avoid are April and May, which bring the long rains. Heavy downpours can make roads muddy, some lodges may close, and wildlife can be harder to spot due to thicker vegetation. November sees short rains, which are usually brief and scattered, and while travel is still possible, conditions can be less predictable.
