Discover Africa’s wild island escape.

For travellers seeking something truly offbeat in East Africa, Rubondo Island delivers a rare adventure. Hidden in Lake Victoria’s southern waters, this remote Tanzanian island is Africa’s largest island national park; an untamed mix of rainforest, savannah, and shimmering beaches. Explore by 4×4, foot, or boat; spot chimpanzees, elephants, hippos, and rare sitatunga. With just one lodge and fly-in access, Rubondo promises exclusivity, solitude, and unforgettable wilderness.

More About Rubondo Island Safari

Travellers looking for a unique twist to an East African tour have a new experience to savour: a Rubondo Island safari. Set in the southern reaches of Lake Victoria and accessible from Tanzania, Rubondo Island is a poignant reminder of the fauna and flora that used to dominate here – thick rainforest ringing to the calls of parrots and home to elephants, antelope and chimpanzees.

Limited accommodation (there is only one lodge on the island) and fly-in logistics means it is both an exclusive and somewhat expensive experience: there is a price to being so far off the beaten track. But what an experience: virtually untouched by tourism, Rubondo offers its visitors a chance to explore Africa’s largest island national park by 4X4, on foot and by boat – a world of forest and grassland, sandy beaches and papyrus swamps.

Decades of conservation have resulted in breeding populations of chimpanzees, giraffes and elephants on the island though these animals are rare sightings. More commonly seen are hippopotamus, crocodile and the bizarrely semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope, perfectly at home in flooded wetlands. And with hundreds of resident and migratory bird species recorded on the island, Rubondo offers excellent, easy bird watching.

Recommended for adventurers and wildlife-lovers, a Rubondo Island safari is your chance to combine the great herds and predators of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater with the primates, butterflies and orchids of Rubondo’s rainforests. Best travel period

When to go - Rubondo Island Safari

Rubondo Island is a year-round destination, but the experience changes noticeably with the seasons. The dry season from June to October is widely considered the best time to visit, offering clear skies, comfortable temperatures and excellent wildlife viewing. Trails are easier to navigate, making this the ideal period for chimpanzee trekking and guided forest walks. With animals concentrating around water sources and calmer lake conditions for boating, this is the peak season for classic safari experiences.

The short rainy season in November and December brings brief showers that transform the island into a lush, green paradise. This is a superb time for birding, as migratory species arrive and the island’s vegetation bursts into colour. While some trails may be a little muddy, the landscape is vibrant, peaceful and full of photographic opportunities.

From January to February, the rains have eased and conditions become more predictable again. Birding remains outstanding during these months, and visitors can still enjoy chimp trekking, boating and forest activities with relatively good weather. It’s a pleasant window for travellers who prefer a quieter atmosphere without the heavier rains.

The long rainy season from March to May is the quietest time to visit. Heavy rainfall brings deep greens and thick vegetation, creating a truly wild and secluded feel. However, this period can make activities more challenging, and some accommodations — including Rubondo Island Camp — close in April and May. For travellers who don’t mind the rain and want total tranquility, this can still be a rewarding season.
