North Luangwa

A destination for safari purists who value solitude and exclusivity, North Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s last true wilderness frontiers.

Overview

Remote, raw, and largely untouched

Remote, exclusive, and utterly untamed, North Luangwa National Park is Zambia’s hidden jewel. With access limited to a select few lodges, it offers unmatched privacy and exclusivity. Along the Mwaleshi River, vast herds of buffalo, elephant, and lion roam, while black rhino thrive in a pioneering conservation success. Walking safaris reveal untouched wilderness and prolific birdlife, making this one of Africa’s most authentic and luxurious safari frontiers.

More About North Luangwa

Remote, raw, and largely untouched, North Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s last true wilderness frontiers. Located in the northern part of the Luangwa Valley, this 4,636 km² park is far less visited than its famous southern counterpart, making it a destination for safari purists who value solitude and exclusivity. Access is strictly controlled, with only a handful of lodges and operators allowed to operate inside the park, ensuring its pristine character is preserved.

The park’s terrain is dominated by the mighty Mwaleshi River, a tributary of the Luangwa, which meanders through open floodplains, oxbow lagoons, and riparian woodland. Away from the river, the landscape shifts into mopane and miombo woodland, with pockets of savannah and thick bush. During the dry season, animals gather around the Mwaleshi’s pools, making it the heartbeat of the park’s wildlife viewing.

North Luangwa is best known for its exceptional populations of lion, buffalo, and elephant, with dramatic predator-prey interactions playing out on its open plains. It is one of the best places in Africa to see massive herds of buffalo, often numbering several hundred to over a thousand.

Other highlights include leopard, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, and a variety of antelope such as kudu, impala, waterbuck, and hartebeest. The park is also notable for its black rhino reintroduction program; a pioneering conservation success led by the Frankfurt Zoological Society, making it the only place in Zambia where black rhino can be seen.

Birdlife is prolific, with over 400 recorded species, including crowned cranes, pel’s fishing owl, and numerous raptors.

When to go - North Luangwa

North Luangwa is a seasonal wilderness, open only from June to October, when conditions are perfect for walking safaris and wildlife viewing. In June & July the bush is still lush and green after the rains, with cooler mornings and evenings. It’s a magical time for birdwatching and for witnessing the park awaken into the dry season. in August & September the landscape begins to dry, concentrating wildlife around the Mwaleshi and Luangwa rivers. This is prime time for dramatic predator-prey interactions and superb photographic opportunities.

October is hot and dry, but wildlife sightings peak as animals gather at dwindling water sources. A truly intense, thrilling safari atmosphere. From November to May, the park closes due to rains and flooding, ensuring its pristine wilderness remains undisturbed. For the ultimate experience, combine North Luangwa in peak season with time in South Luangwa or the Lower Zambezi, creating a journey that blends exclusivity, adventure, and comfort.
