When to go

The best time to combine the Okavango Delta, Khwai, Chobe National Park, and Victoria Falls (Zambia side) in a single safari itinerary is during the shoulder months of April to May, when conditions are optimal across all four destinations. The Delta’s floodplains are lush and alive with birdlife and mokoro excursions, Khwai offers exceptional predator sightings and intimate game drives, Chobe’s riverfront teems with elephants and diverse wildlife perfect for boat cruises, and Victoria Falls is at its most spectacular with strong water flow yet clear visibility. Together, these months balance mild temperatures, fewer mosquitoes, and rewarding wildlife and scenic encounters, making them ideal for a multi‑stop safari.

Winter (June to August) is also a good option, particularly for safari enthusiasts. Dry conditions concentrate animals around permanent water sources in Kwai and Chobe, while the Delta’s waterways remain breathtaking for boat trips. Victoria Falls is still impressive, though water levels begin to drop, offering clearer views of the gorge. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so warm layers are essential.

Summer (December and March) brings lush greenery and calving season, which is excellent for birdwatching and newborn wildlife. The Delta is vibrant with high water levels, but dense vegetation makes spotting animals more challenging. Kwai and Chobe can be hot and humid, with wildlife dispersing more widely, while Victoria Falls is at peak flow, creating dramatic spray but sometimes obscuring views.

The least favorable months are January and February, when heavy rains and flooding affect accessibility in the Delta and Khwai, Chobe experiences humid conditions with less predictable wildlife viewing, and Victoria Falls’ spray can make visibility difficult.
