Travel To Moremi

Moremi

Protecting much of the Okavango Delta, Moremi is home to big cats, wild dogs & amazing birding.

Overview

A blend of Wetlands and Woodlands

A mesmerising mosaic of wetlands and woodlands, the Moremi Game Reserve is one of Africa’s most beautiful conservation areas. It’s also one of the most important. Protecting much of the Okavango Delta, Moremi is home to great herds of elephant and buffalo as well as big cats, wild dogs, hippos and crocodiles. Its forests hide rare antelope and its waterways ring with birdsong – Moremi is wild Africa as it perhaps once was.

More About Moremi

It is also an easy destination to experience. Thatched lodges and tented camps are scattered throughout the reserve, usually accessed by air from the local travel hub – Maun airport. And there’s plenty to do. Guests enjoy morning and afternoon game drives with sharp-eyed guides; some lodges offer nature walks as well as boating and canoeing in high water season. Accommodations in private reserves adjoining Moremi offer similar activities with the bonus of spot-lit night drives.

Moremi Game Reserve is also perfect for a guided overland safari with a professional operator. Travellers can expect exclusive-use campsites, comfortable tents and plenty of campfire camaraderie. You’ll be first out in the morning to catch Moremi’s predators on the move & will range far and wide for the best game sightings.

Lying between the deeper reaches of the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park, Moremi fits very easily into a Botswana safari. Fly-in itineraries with lodge accommodation can be designed from Moremi to Victoria Falls, taking in wildlife hotspots Savuti and the Chobe River on the way. Guided overland safaris follow a similar route, and most will spend time in different locations in Moremi to maximise game viewing.

It’s an appealing destination to different types of travellers too. Accommodation in Moremi ranges from uber-luxurious and honeymoon-perfect to family-friendly and exclusive-use. Ask us about lodges with extra activities like fishing, elephant interaction and private guiding.

When to go - Moremi

The scale of Moremi’s wildlife means that the reserve can be considered a year-round destination for game viewing. But the landscape changes considerably with the seasons, each offering a different aspect to your experience.

The dry winter months from May to October see the highest water levels in Moremi, great for boating activities and game viewing. The floods are most extensive in mid-winter – June to August – and attract great numbers of animals. In terms of temperatures, it’s the mildest time of year with crisp-cold nights and a very low risk of malaria. September and October however are very hot.

The rainy summer months of December to April have advantages for keen naturalists. It’s the best time for bird watching and since it’s also the antelope birthing season – summer is always a good time for predators! It’s low water season though: boating & canoeing are usually only available at lodges set next to permanent water.

Itinerary Ideas - Moremi

Experience the magic of Moremi

Make your Moremi safari the centrepiece of an epic Botswana itinerary. Home to one of the greatest densities of big game in Africa, the Moremi Game Reserve combines with the Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta to create an unbeatable wildlife experience. If you want a study in contrast to the well-watered Moremi, then consider a Kalahari safari add-on; a few nights spent surrounded by oceans of sand and silence. And with Victoria Falls just across the border from the Chobe River, you can end your itinerary with the Smoke that Thunders.

Moremi is however a reserve of different environments. Some lodges lie on permanent water and offer boating all year; others are set in seasonally dry grasslands. Accommodations located in private concessions offer night drives and walks, adding to your experience. When designing a Moremi safari, it is important to establish the nature of the lodge – water or land-based, privately located or not – when deciding on your accommodation.

Where to next?

A Moremi safari is usually part of a bigger Botswana itinerary. Ease of access means Moremi can be effortlessly combined with the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park as well as Botswana’s less-visited wildlife destinations such as the Kalahari reserves and remote Linyanti and Kwando wetlands. It’s also easy to add Victoria Falls to your Moremi safari – work your way there through the Chobe National Park or fly there from Maun airport.
