Itinerary

Days 1 – 2: A Riverside Setting
Set on Robin Pope’s private reserve, Nkwali Camp is the ideal place to acclimatise to your new environment. Offering understated luxury and fine service, Nkwali takes advantage of its setting on the Luangwa River to offer boating safaris as well as game drives in the South Luangwa National Park. It is a game-rich twist of the Luangwa: the bird count is an amazing 400 species, and you may see animals ranging from elephants and hippos to giraffes and leopards simply from the comfort of camp. Accommodation takes the form of open-fronted A-frame chalets of wood, thatch and stone, complete with an outdoor shower.
Days 3 – 5: Into the Luangwa
After breakfast you enjoy a game drive all the way to Nsefu, the first photographic lodge in the South Luangwa and a destination of exceptional wildlife viewing. The original rondavels – round cottages – are beautifully renovated and provide sweeping views of the Luangwa River. There’s time for lunch and a siesta before your afternoon drive; then you have two full days of safari ahead of you, mixing game drives and walks with expert guides for a comprehensive Luangwa experience. There is also the opportunity to go for a full-day drive or even visit a local community.

Days 6 - 8: Discover the Zambezi
It is a morning’s journey to the Lower Zambezi but you’ll arrive in time for lunch at Chiawa and can relax with stunning views of the Zambezi River while you contemplate your new surroundings. Lying in the heart of big game country, Chiawa is a small and intimate tented camp with a wide range of safari activities: choose from game drives and walks as well as night drives, river kayaking and boat trips – you can even enjoy catch-and-release angling for the infamous tiger fish. Game viewing is of the heavyweight kind: the area is good for elephant, buffalo, hippo and the big cats.
Days 9 -10: To the Smoke that Thunders
The Zambezi River experience continues at Tongabezi. Here on the Upper Zambezi you can relax in your beautiful chalet while watching the waters of the Zambezi flow past on the way to tumble over Victoria Falls, a few miles downstream from the lodge. You have the rest of the day and the whole next day to see what the Smoke that Thunders has to offer: a complimentary transfer to Victoria Falls is worth taking up, and Tongabezi will help you with any bookings you might want to make – white-water rafting, bungee jumping, elephant-back safaris or walking with lions.

Day 11: The Journey Ends
After breakfast overlooking the Zambezi there may be time for a final morning activity at Tongabezi Lodge – perhaps a visit to one of their community projects – before your transfer back to Livingstone Airport. Here your Classic Zambia Safari comes to an end as you make your onward connection.
