Itinerary
Days 1 – 2: To the Luangwa River
Having left Lusaka Airport, the adventure begins after you touch down in Mfuwe. Your guide will meet and drive you to the banks of the Luangwa River and either Chinzombo or Kapani Lodge. They lie close to each other on ox-bow bends of the river and provide the perfectly luxurious base from which to settle into your extraordinary new surroundings. During your time here you’ll explore by 4X4, taking advantage of the lodge’s private setting to enjoy spot-lit night drives too, the best way to see many of Africa’s smaller predators.
Days 3 – 4: Into the Wilderness
You’ll be driven deep into the South Luangwa National Park today; your destination is Luwi Bush Camp, one of the most remote camps in the park. Set under towering mahogany trees, the camp overlooks river floodplains teeming with game and lies near a hippo and crocodile-filled lagoon. There are only four grass and thatch chalets, giving the camp an intimate and familiar atmosphere; Luwi also has a honeymoon cottage with facilities for private dining. Activities here are the classic combination of game drives and guided bush walks. You’ll be in the safe hands of some of the best guides in the business.
Days 5 – 6: A Walk to Nsolo
After breakfast you lace up your boots and follow your guide along the Luwi River. A few hours later you arrive at Nsolo Bush Camp, tucked away on a bend in the river. Its thatch chalets have been built around shady trees and have private viewing decks. Nsolo lies in beautiful walking country and the on-foot experience is complemented by night-drives. The permanent water attracts great numbers of animals, especially in the dry season. Elephants and lions are regular visitors to the river, scattering giraffe, zebra and antelope as they approach.
Days 7 – 8: Big Game at Kakuli
Kakuli Bush Camp lies at the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers where the density of wildlife is among the highest in Africa. Predators are especially notable here, including the normally elusive leopard. Elephants occasionally pass through camp, and a nearby Carmine Bee-eater colony adds a splash of tropical colour in summer. The focus at Kakuli is on morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles. Spot-lit night drives add to the drama. If water levels are high enough, you can explore by boat, a treat for bird watchers.
Days 9 – 10: A Luxurious Finale
Named after the ebony trees under which it lies, Mchenje Bush Camp offers an indulgent final reward. Its grand tented suites have a private bathroom and deck overlooking the Luangwa River; the main lodge has a plunge pool and serves candlelit suppers on the river banks. Mchenje is located in another particularly game-rich area; activities are a blend of walking safaris and day and night game drives.
Day 11: The Journey Ends
After breakfast you’ll be transferred back to Mfuwe Airport for a scheduled flight back to Lusaka and your onward connection. If you’d like to add a few days on in Victoria Falls simply let us know and we’ll arrange everything.
