Itinerary

Days 1 – 3: To the Luwi River
The adventure begins at Luwi Bush Camp, lying deep in the South Luangwa National Park and next to the seasonal Luwi River itself. A twisting ribbon of sandbanks and hippo-filled lagoons, the river attracts animals all year but especially during the dry season when the river becomes the only source of water for many miles. Elephants, buffalo and giraffe cluster the Luwi along with zebra, antelope and warthog, attracting lions, hyenas and leopards. You’ll be exploring on foot in the early mornings and late afternoons, accompanied by some of the best guides in the business. Back at camp, your thatch chalet has everything you need for comfort, including a private bathroom and solar-powered lighting. Make sure you spend some time in the hide that overlooks a hippo-filled lagoon, perfect for wildlife photographers.
Days 4 – 5: Downstream to Nsolo
Following the flow of the river, you walk across sand drifts, palm groves and game-rich grassy hollows, arriving at Nsolo Bush Camp for lunch in the shade. Set on a bend in the river, solar-powered Nsolo consists of 4 spacious chalets on raised wooden decks with grass and reed walls and large, open air en-suite bathrooms. It is primarily a walking camp but game drives are offered to mix up the experience. The area has a healthy reputation for big game: lions are often encountered patrolling the dry river beds and wild dogs breed in the area.

Days 6: Return to the Wild
Tonight you have the option to trade your chalet at Nsolo for a bedroll and mosquito net and the chance to sleep wild. Together with your guide and armed ranger, you walk until you find a suitable place for the night, set up your modest but comfortable camp, light a fire and let the night fall around you. Supper is served under a canopy of stars with a soundtrack of the wild African night. It’s the quintessential once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Days 7 – 8: Where Two Rivers Meet
The journey continues downstream to where the Luwi meets the Luangwa River. Here lies one of Africa’s richest game areas, a place of great animal densities, and at the heart of it sits Kakuli Bush Camp, its tented suites overlooking the flowing Luangwa. With over 60 mammal and 400 bird species in the area, your hosts offer a mix of game drives and walks to maximise your game viewing experience. In high water season you can even take to the river by boat and gain a new perspective into the Luangwa environment.

Day 9: The Adventure Ends
A game drive after breakfast takes you back to the border of the park and Mfuwe Airport. You’ll then fly back to Lusaka for your onward connection. If you’d like to add a day or two onto your trip and see Victoria Falls then simply let us know.
