Plan your 2023 Victoria Falls Lunar Rainbow

Overview

Of all the natural wonders that lie in wait for visitors at Victoria Falls, surely a lunar rainbow is the least expected. By the light of the monthly full moon, the misty spray of the waterfall reveals an arc of light, as surely as sunshine produces a rainbow on rainy days.

Seen with the naked eye the lunar rainbow at Victoria Falls is a dazzling white but take a photograph of it and the full spectrum of colours is revealed. It’s a fascinating experience, especially since there aren’t many other places in the world you can view a night time rainbow. It’s a photographer’s delight and well worth putting on a must-do list for Victoria Falls – but wait a minute: you need a full moon. And it helps to have some insider tips too.

Let’s start with a few details. You can only view the lunar rainbow from inside the national park that surrounds the waterfall. You’ll be in a group and accompanied by a park official; it’ll be wet – raincoats are supplied but you may want to bring your own. Bring a flashlight. And if you plan to take photographs, make sure you have a flash, perhaps a tripod and be ready for wet conditions.

The tour is around two hours long and is offered each night over a three day period: the night before full moon; full moon; and then the night after full moon.

So far so good. Now, when to go. Full moon obviously, and if you plan to see the lunar rainbow, then it’s good to know what else you can do at Victoria Falls – and what it best combines with – at that time of year.
