Itinerary
Days 1 – 2: The Hide at Hwange
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s biggest and most famous reserve. Sharing an unfenced border with Botswana, it serves as a vital dry-season destination for thousands of elephants and buffalos, drawn to Hwange’s permanent water. And your accommodation – The Hide – is set overlooking one of the most productive waterholes, complete with photographic hide for sensational views of wildlife at water. The lodge sits in a private concession so you’ll enjoy exclusive sightings plus activities not permitted in the main park: spot-lit night drives and bush walks with your guide and ranger. Accommodation takes the form of luxurious tented suites with private bathrooms and viewing decks.
Days 3 – 4: Lakeside Luxury
A morning flight from Hwange to Matusadona takes a tough day of road travel out of your itinerary and gets you settled in and overlooking Lake Kariba by early afternoon. Intimate and luxurious Changa Safari Camp has superb views of the lake and distant mountains and it makes the perfect base to explore Matusadona National Park. This is one of Zimbabwe’s last wild corners and home to big cats, wild dogs and the heavyweights: elephant, buffalo and hippo. Game drives take you into the thick of the action but there’s also sedate boating and fishing trips on offer, and bird watchers will benefit by going on a walk with one of the camp’s bird guides.
Days 5 – 6: Multi-Activity Mana Pools
Your accommodation at Mana Pools is Kanga Bush Camp, and it’s at this beautifully designed and eco-sensitive camp that you’ll have the chance to explore every facet of the teeming Lower Zambezi River. Kanga specialises in walking safaris, and little can beat the sensation of walking with expert guides in the heart of big game country. But you can also take to the Zambezi by canoe or boat, and there are day and night drives on offer plus bird watching and full-day safaris with a picnic lunch. It’s the perfect camp for anyone looking for adventure and its huge shady trees provide a beguiling shady retreat on hot days.
Day 7: The Journey Ends
It’s a short flight from Mana Pools back to Victoria Falls Airport. If you’d like to end with some time at Victoria Falls, simply let us know and we can add it on. Victoria Falls Zimbabwe has the widest range of accommodation from hotels and lodges to safari camps in private reserves and you’ll have full access to all the exciting activities that the ‘Smoke that Thunders’ delivers.
