More About Tanzania

Travel to Tanzania for the most diverse safari destination in Africa. Most famous for the Serengeti wildebeest migration, Tanzania also offers Big 5 game viewing, the largest elephant herds in East Africa and chimpanzee tracking safaris. Home to the ‘Spice Island’ Zanzibar, Tanzania is also a place of white-sand beaches, teeming coral reefs and dhow cruises at sunset.

If you do want to witness the migration, you’ll need to time your visit as the wildebeest move around the park according to season. You’ll need to book early too but it’s worth the early commitment: the Serengeti is home to some of the most action-packed events of the migration. The birthing season attracts big cats and wild dogs; the river crossing season is when the herds run the gauntlet of giant crocodiles on their return to the Masai Mara.

Tanzania’s best known safari destinations – the SerengetiNgorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire Park – are easily combined and known collectively as the northern safari circuit. It’s easy to add a beach holiday onto the circuit, making Tanzania travel attractive to families as well as honeymooners and romance-seeking couples. Accommodation ranges from tented bush camps to grand safari lodges as well as city hotels and private beach villas.

Ideal for first-time safari travellers, Tanzania is also the perfect destination for seasoned safari-goers. Standards of guiding and service are high, and several places accommodate families with young children. The country’s less-visited parks and reserves have healthy reputations for game viewing and are home to some of the greatest concentrations of Africa’s biggest animals such as elephant and lion.

Tanzania also combines well with neighbouring Kenya. Serengeti migration safaris often include Kenya’s Masai Mara on the itinerary, and so you have the advantage of seeing the migration in one place as well as enjoying crowd-free game viewing in the other. And if you want to supersize your safari, it’s simple to add on a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda or Rwanda.

Experience the magic of Tanzania

The most popular Tanzania safari is the Northern Circuit – a classic mix of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara. Set within easy travelling distance of each other, these destinations guarantee you a wide diversity of landscapes and animals – including the wildebeest migration if your timing is right. You’ll enjoy a combination of local flights and overland transfers to get around.

Yet many of Tanzania’s best safari destinations lie off the beaten path. There is chimpanzee tracking in the magical Mahale Mountains and giant wildlife reserves like Ruaha and the Selous to explore, each packed with animals but attracting only a fraction of the visitors who go to the Serengeti.

We also feature Tanzania safaris in combination with Kenya’s Masai Mara, assuring you migration drama in one area and crowd-free game viewing at another. And for travellers who feel like a bit of indulgence after their Tanzania safari, we have itineraries that include an Indian Ocean beach holiday on dazzling Zanzibar – something highly recommended for romantic travellers.

When to go

Tanzania’s huge size and varied geography means a varied climate as well as two rainy seasons; the best time to go to Tanzania depends on your expectations. If you want to witness the wildebeest migration you’ll need to visit Tanzania between November and August; if you are looking for the best conditions to explore Tanzania’s other parks and reserves such as Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Ruaha and Selous, then a dry season visit between June and October is highly recommended.

Mount Kilimanjaro is best hiked in the drier months of the year: between July and October or January to March. The best time for a holiday on Zanzibar as well as Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast and islands is between August and October. We’d recommend avoiding the coast during the long rains of March to May.
