Namibia

Discover Namibia’s astonishing contrasts; towering red dunes, wildlife-rich reserves, bird-filled wetlands, and a wild, shipwreck-strewn coast.

Overview

Golden dunes, wild coasts, untamed luxury

Travel to Namibia for a holiday of such breathtaking diversity that you’ll be questioning whether you’re even in the same country. Thriving game reserves, bird-filled wetlands, and towering red dunes all feature on the same itinerary – and that’s before you add a wild, shipwreck-strewn coastline, haunting desert ghost towns, and dramatic canyons carved over millennia. Whether tracking desert-adapted elephants, exploring salt pans under endless skies, or stargazing in some of the world’s clearest nights, Namibia offers an adventure that’s as varied as it is unforgettable.

More About Namibia

Namibia is a land of awe-inspiring scenery – and a photographer’s dream. Its giant dunes reach 1000 feet into sunny skies; its rugged mountains hide rock paintings and bizarre lunar landscapes. It’s also excellent for wildlife and proud protector of the biggest black rhino and cheetah populations in Africa. Travel to Etosha Park, its flagship reserve, to see desert animals rub shoulders with their savannah cousins – often quite literally around a waterhole. Other regions are home to unique desert-adapted elephants or vast seal colonies.

It’s an easy country to get around. The best Namibia travel destinations are well connected by modern infrastructure. Most travellers join an overland tour or fly between accommodation ranging from boutique hotels and grand safari lodges to private villas and honeymoon hideaways. Many tours combine overland and air travel. Levels of service and comfort on safari are high and you’ll enjoy expertly guided game drives, nature walks, cultural encounters and even hot air balloon flights.

Everyone finds Namibia a safe, relaxed and friendly country to visit. It’s as welcoming to honeymooners and couples as it is to families with children. Adrenalin junkies can choose from a long list of white-knuckle activities at Swakopmund; independent-minded travellers can take advantage of Namibia’s open roads and enjoy a self-drive tour. Budget-minded visitors will also find plenty to smile about too – Namibia’s travel destinations can be enjoyed on an overland camping tour without breaking the bank.

Itinerary Ideas

Experience the magic of Namibia

A Namibia safari can be divided into two types: those that begin and end in Namibia – usually from the capital Windhoek; and those which include other destinations, usually in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.

There’s certainly enough to see and do in Namibia to create an itinerary that stays within the country. Must-see destinations such as the Sossusvlei dunes, Etosha National Park, the Skeleton Coast and Damaraland easily fit into the same itinerary, either on fly-in tours, guided safaris or self-drive adventures. Self-drivers have the advantage of flexible travel between destinations but full use of the lodge facilities where they stay, including game drives and other safari activities.

You’ll need to fly into the remote Kaokoveld if you want to add it to your Namibia safari but destinations in Botswana such as the Chobe National Park are easy to access on a Namibia safari. And with Victoria Falls just a short drive across the Botswana border, you can finish your tour with the Smoke that Thunders, a fine contrast to the sandy wastes of the Namib.

Best travel period

When to go

With a climate dominated by two seasons – a long dry winter and short wet summer – when best to travel Namibia depends on your priorities.

The May to October dry season is generally seen as the best time to visit. You’ll enjoy the most comfortable weather – mild and dry from May to August (with very cold nights) and hot and dry September and October. It’s great for game viewing, especially around waterholes, and the risk of malaria is at its lowest.

The summer rains transform the Namibian landscape – arid plains turn green and once-dry rivers flow. Rain usually comes in the form of afternoon thundershowers but there are long sunny periods in between, and summer game viewing is often very rewarding. Many antelope give birth at this time of year, attracting the attentions of big cats, hyenas and wild dogs; migrant birds fill the air with song and flooded desert pans shine pink with flamingos.
